MobileCoach – an open-source platform for health intervention and digital biomarker projects

MobileCoach - an open-source Software Platform for Digital Biomarker and Health Intervention Research

With the goal to provide an open-source software platform for the design and evaluation of digital health interventions, MobileCoach was developed in 2014 under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Kowatsch. The platform is continuously improved and extended in a collaborative effort of experts in the fields of medicine, computer science, information systems research and psychologists at the Centre for Digital Health Interventions (CDHI), Dartmouth’s Center for Technology and Behavioral Health (CTBH, www.c4tbh.org), by the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), among others.

Together with his partners, Prof. Dr. Kowatsch and the MobileCoach team have run experiments, from usability studies to clinical RCTs, in the fields of diet and nutrition, substance use disorders, stress and burnout, chronic pain, diabetes and asthma resulting in more than 50 scientific publications. MobileCoach does not only support patients but also healthcare practitioners and thus, various medical experts at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Switzerland in St. Gallen, the University of Zurich, the University of Geneva or at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine have been or are currently using MobileCoach applications. Organizations such as the Swiss Lung Association (www.r4l.swiss) or the Swiss BLV (MySwissFoodPyramid app) have already released MobileCoach-based interventions to the Swiss public.

Due to many requests from industry and academia, the HSG and ETH spin-off Pathmate Technologies (www.pathmate-technologies.com) was founded in 2017 to offer digital clinical pathways based on MobileCoach technology. First medical Class I products are now available, for example, for hypertension patients in Germany (www.manoa.app), or for individuals with hypertension, type-2 diabetes or insomnia in Switzerland (Sanitas Coach App). To this end, MobileCoach has not only had an impact in the scientific community through various publications but also on the German and Swiss healthcare systems and societies in the last four years.

From 2019 to 2022, MobileCoach was used in Prof. Dr. Kowatsch’s teaching activities at ETH Zurich and the University of St.Gallen. From Fall 2022, the lecture “Digital Health in Practice“ will be taught by Prof Dr. Kowatsch at the University of Zürich and made available to ETH students.

At ETH Industry Day 2022, MobileCoach will be represented by:
